What is Testosterone, and why is it important in men?

Testosterone, the hormone that directs male appearance and healthy muscle, bone, and sexual function, declines as we age. Levels of this hormone drop about 1% each year beginning at about age 30. Studies reveal that testosterone levels are declining worldwide in men when compared to previous decades.  Many theories as to why are being considered including cell phone usage, environmental toxins, etc.  But no definitive reason has been proven.

How will I know if my testosterone is low?

Low testosterone levels, often referred to as hypogonadism, can cause symptoms such as fatigue, depression, and diminished sex drive and functioning. They may also contribute to osteoporosis, a decline in muscle mass and cognitive function, and anemia.  Are you feeling tired all the time? Are you not feeling a lack of desire and energy?  Some psychiatrists even consider checking testosterone levels in men as part of a screening for depression. If you experience any of the above symptoms, you should have your testosterone level checked.

What are the benefits of testosterone optimization?

  • Less fat and more muscle
  • Stronger bones
  • Increased sex drive
  • Firmer erections
  • Improved mood

What is the best treatment for low testosterone
(Low T)?

There are essentially 3 forms of treatment available.  Each has its benefits and in some cases minuses.  Testosterone shots are usually injected weekly, creams or gels applied daily, or a novel approach is through bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (more on this below). Shots work quickly but are not released in the natural way our bodies release our sex hormone.  Instead, shots peak in approximately 3 days. Furthermore, testosterone shots are made from horse serum and therefore are not identical to the testosterone we humans make.  Creams and gels have a better release pattern but are expensive (can be over $800 per month), and do not always raise testosterone to optimal levels.  Like shots, gels and creams are derived from horse testosterone.  Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy involves placing small pellets the size of a rice grain under the skin.  The pellets are plant-based but have an identical structure to human testosterone.  The insertion takes less than 15 minutes, last up to 4 or 5 months.  The testosterone is released in a manner similar to how our body releases it.

At OB Men, we choose the best treatment for the patient.  Other centers only focus on delivering in-office shots.  We at OB Men realize one shoe does not fit all sizes.  We strive to optimize and individualize your treatment.

BTW, Oral “mens” supplements do not work; studies show no significant testosterone boost with oral supplements as advertised on TV).  Sorry, wish it was that easy.

Low-T Treatment

Dr. Camp developed a unique treatment that may be the right option for specific male patients.  It started with a patient who had prostate cancer and subsequent removal (prostatectomy).  The patient also had radiation therapy which over time led to testicular atrophy (shrinkage). This resulted in loss of libido and ED.  With a unique treatment protocol devised by Dr. Camp, the patient was again able to obtain erections, as well as have ejaculate again.  Moreover, the patient developed a normal testicular size and was able to increase his natural testosterone production.  Dr. Camp has treated a number of similar patients since with similar outcomes. Dr. Camp is embarking on a larger clinical trial at this time and is screening patients for enrollment.
